For many Christians, not just those in Orthodoxy, the Nicene Creed is an authoritative summary only when the filioque clause is not included. I know John's Gospel becomes a battle field here between the Orthodox and Rome, but this clause was added later, so if we are to err, let's err on the side of the older tradition.
